The key international event at the local level, the General Assembly of the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities, will take place from March 15 to 17 in New Delhi. The gathering will mark a significant milestone, officially transferring the Association’s Chairmanship to the Republic of India for the forthcoming period.

Building on the successful precedent set by the first meeting in Maricá, Brazil, the Assembly will convene city mayors, heads of municipal associations, experts, and local government representatives from BRICS nations and partner states. India’s chairmanship is expected to set a new trajectory for collaboration, focusing on the most pressing issues for developing megacities: digital transformation, climate change adaptation, inclusive development, and urban infrastructure modernization.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, meetings will be held by the Association’s thematic Committees on Social Development, Digitalization, Architecture and Urban Planning, Ecology and Sustainable Development, the BRICS+ Women’s Committee, as well as a roundtable on tourism. These sessions will serve as a platform for sharing best practices and discussing strategies for creating safe urban environments, implementing new technologies, and addressing climate challenges.

Special attention will be paid to celebrating the centenary of the All-India Institute of Local Self-Government, highlighting India’s extensive experience and contribution to municipal development.

We are confident that the upcoming General Assembly will strengthen inter-city cooperation, open new avenues for dialogue and joint projects, and lay a solid foundation for the Association’s activities in the coming year under India’s Chairmanship.
