Joint Statement Regarding the Situation in Venezuela
Share

The BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities expresses its profound concern regarding the recent extraordinary intervention by the United States in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. We reaffirm the inviolable principles of sovereign equality of states and of non-intervention in their internal affairs, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The detention of a head of state is an unprecedented action challenging the fundamental norms of international law and diplomatic practice. Such acts risk destabilizing the international order and eroding the mutual respect necessary for peaceful coexistence among nations.

We emphasize that the authority to determine the leadership and political direction of Venezuela resides solely with its people, in accordance with their constitutional framework, free from any form of external coercion or force. The use of extraterritorial measures against a foreign head of state is incompatible with the principles of a multipolar world based on international law.

Therefore, the Association calls for the immediate respect of Venezuela’s sovereignty and its right to political self-determination. We urge all members of the international community to uphold their legal obligations and to address any concerns exclusively through established diplomatic channels and multilateral fora.

We express our hope for a swift and peaceful decisions as international law should reflect the balance of interests of all countries, rather than being replaced by rules that benefit certain powers.
