The creation of the BRICS+ Association of Cities and Municipalities has been supported by more than 100 municipalities from different countries around the world. This was reported by the Deputy Mayor of Kazan, Evgeniya Lodvigova. Representatives from cities in Brazil, India, Iran, China, South Africa, Turkey, Chile, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and other countries will come to Kazan for the first founding meeting of the association, which will take place on June 21.
The creation of the association was announced in February this year by the Mayor of Kazan, Ilsur Metshin, during his speech to the ambassadors of BRICS member countries at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow
«Municipalities of friendly countries should have their own voice on the international stage. We have long followed Western models. But we have our own vast heritage and rich experience in solving pressing urban issues. And today, it is time for more active interaction, the establishment of economic, cultural, and scientific ties for mutual enrichment and development. The need for such a structure is now clear,» said the Mayor of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan.
- Ilsur Metshin appealed to the ambassadors of the BRICS member states to support the idea and invited representatives of friendly countries to the first founding meeting of the BRICS Cities Association. The format of the upcoming event is not limited to the countries within this union, which is why its status was defined as «BRICS+».
- As Evgeniya Lodvigova clarified, confirmation of attendance is still coming in from mayors of cities around the world, so the final list of participants for the founding meeting will be formed later. However, it is already clear that the event will be representative and reflect the interests of various countries.
